A former suburban police officer will serve more than five years in prison for plotting to steal cash and drugs during traffic stops.
Antoine Larry, a former patrol officer for the Phoenix, Illinois, Police Department who was convicted of conspiracy, extortion, and attempted extortion in January, was sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison on Wednesday, according to Andrew Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
According to Boutros, Larry colluded with another officer between 2020 and 2022 to solicit cash and drugs from car passengers during traffic stops.
Prosecutors said Larry and his companion chose their victims based on the circumstances surrounding the stops. If the motorist was about to be held or have their car towed and the cops suspected they would not report corruption, Larry and his accomplice would solicit cash bribes in exchange for lower charges, not towing the car, or allowing the individual to go without citations.
The cops would then fabricate police reports to hide the misconduct.
Jarrett Snowden, the other officer implicated in the scam, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge before trial and admitted to his role in it.
Larry’s sentence was imposed last Monday by United States District Judge John Kness.
Snowden is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on October 27.
