A Clermont woman was taken into custody for driving drunk in the parking lot of a behavioral school.
Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers came to Better Life Academy, located at 1650 W Main St., for an intoxicated teacher, 55-year-old Amy Kathleen Shabluk, behind the wheel, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Another employee noticed her driving and urged her to turn off the vehicle. He also closed and locked the parking lot gate, preventing her from driving away. He knew she was intoxicated because an officer had already been summoned to the school when employees detected alcohol on her breath, according to the report.
During that call, she was unstable enough to lean on walls and surfaces. An officer also discovered an open bottle of Captain Morgan in her vehicle’s trunk, according to the report.
The first officer on the scene witnessed Shabluk get out of a gray Ford Bronco and later handed him the keys. She told police that she merely wanted to drive around the corner to meet her husband. She smelled of alcohol and was unstable, with droopy, watery eyes, according to the report.
Shabluk then agreed to engage in field sobriety exercises. Her performance, which included losing balance and using a building for support, prompted the police to believe she was under the influence. She later gave breath samples weighing 0.293 g/210 L and 0.292 g/210 L, according to the report.
In addition, a review of her criminal history revealed that she had been convicted of DUI in 2019, the report stated. She was engaged in a crash at Clermont’s East Ride High School.
Shabluk was arrested for DUI and put into the Lake County Jail. The Michigan native was released after posting a $2,000 bond.
