Child reported missing found dead in Lake Erie, Cleveland fire department says

CLEVELAND — Officials recovered the body of a child who reportedly went missing near a dock on Lake Erie in Cleveland Saturday evening, they said Sunday afternoon.

A Cleveland Division of Fire spokesperson said members of the Cleveland Metroparks Dive Team recovered the boy’s body. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is assisting with the transportation of the body.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed to 3News Sunday morning that the response had shifted to a recovery mission. The Coast Guard left the scene Sunday morning and turned the search over to Cleveland authorities.

Crews responded Saturday night to a report of a child in the water at a marina located at 5555 N. Marginal Rd., prompting a fire boat to scan the area and make multiple passes, the Cleveland fire department said.

Crews also deployed two divers. A Cleveland police helicopter, boat and drone units assisted in the search on scene, along with other local public safety departments, according to the Cleveland Division of Police.

Crews called off the search operation Saturday night and resumed it Sunday morning, the Cleveland Fire Department said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
