COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 1-year-old boy has died after a shooting on the city’s southeast side Saturday night, the Columbus Division of Police said.
Officers responded to the 3000 block of Quinby Drive around 10:55 p.m. on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the victim, identified as Jashawn Butler, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and transported Butler to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 12:09 a.m. Sunday.
Police said his father, 35-year-old Deshawn Butler, fled the scene before officers arrived. Court records show Deshawn later turned himself in at police headquarters on unrelated outstanding warrants.
Franklin County Municipal Court documents say Deshawn told police he and his son were in a bedroom, where he was securing his gun in a safe. Deshawn said he became distracted and stepped away without realizing he’d left the safe door open.
Moments later, records say, a gunshot went off in the bedroom, and Deshawn found that Jashawn had shot himself.
Deshawn faces one count of felony child endangering.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday.
