FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV/Gray News) – One construction worker died and two others sustained injuries when a crane malfunction resulted in their fall from a bridge during the course of their work.
The West Virginia State Police reported that a heavy crane malfunctioned at a construction site on Interstate 79 over White Day Creek Road Tuesday morning.
The malfunction caused concrete barriers to strike three construction workers, knocking them off the bridge.
Mickey W. Swisher, 30, of Morgantown, W.Va., was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.
The two other workers were transported to a hospital. According to Monongalia County 911, one of them was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. Their current conditions remain unknown.
Initially, 911 officials informed WDTV that a vehicle crash had caused the incident. However, the West Virginia State Police later confirmed that a crane malfunction was the actual cause.
The West Virginia State Police will lead the investigation into the incident.
