An Independence man with a history of burglary was apprehended Tuesday morning at a Sugar Creek business.
According to court documents filed in Jackson County, Irvin Rill was charged with first-degree burglary and possessing burglary tools after attempting to rob the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge at 510 N. Sterling Avenue.
The Sugar Creek Police Department was dispatched to the site shortly before 4:45 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a burglary in progress. An employee inside the business called 911 and claimed that a man inside the establishment was armed with a gun.
While court filings state that no firearms was recovered, authorities searched the building and discovered Rill in an internal room. As authorities opened the door, Rill was heard saying, ‘I’m coming out!’ according to the probable cause affidavit.
According to court filings, a sweep of the establishment led cops to two crowbars, a flashlight, and a screwdriver on a poker table on the east side of the shop near the slot machines. An unidentified amount of money was discovered on a barstool and right beneath another barstool within the establishment.
When questioned by police, Rill stated that he came to the company between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and had second thoughts in the woods with his crowbar and pillowcase.
Rill told SCPD that he knew there was gambling inside the establishment and hoped there was money inside. Rill claimed he found cash inside the business office and grabbed it.
According to police, Rill has previous felony burglary convictions in Barton, Vernon, Chariton, Moniteau, Ray, Callaway, and Cedar counties dating back to 2006.
Rill is being jailed under a $10,000 bond. His first appearance in court has yet to be scheduled.
