Pocatello, ID — Central Idaho is getting an early taste of winter this weekend as a potent storm sweeps across the region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon Saturday through midnight Sunday for the Frank Church Wilderness, the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, the Sun Valley area, and the Big Lost Highlands/Copper Basin.
The National Weather Service in Pocatello expects snow to develop this afternoon, intensifying through tonight. Higher elevations above 7,000 feet could pick up 6 to 12 inches by Sunday night, while communities near 6,000 feet—including Stanley, Ketchum, and Sun Valley—may see 1 to 4 inches.
Travel impacts are likely, particularly on mountain passes where slick roads and reduced visibility could make driving hazardous. Gusty winds up to 35 mph may further lower visibility and could bring down tree branches. Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and check 511.idaho.gov for the latest road conditions.
The advisory remains in place until midnight Sunday, with conditions expected to improve gradually as the system shifts east.
Residents and visitors are urged to plan ahead and be prepared for winter driving through the weekend.
