Grand theft charge filed over $22K in unpaid Ohio Turnpike tolls

BRYAN, Ohio – An Illinois man has been indicted on a grand theft charge after authorities allege that a truck he owns or operates accumulated $21,991 in unpaid tolls on the Ohio Turnpike.

Moath Musamih, of Orland Park, Illinois, is set to appear in Williams County Common Pleas Court on Monday for his initial hearing on the fourth-degree felony charge.

The indictment, filed April 21, states that the toll charges accumulated between April 12, 2024, and April 1 of this year.

A fourth-degree felony carries a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months.

The Ohio Turnpike has recently intensified efforts to recover overdue tolls from truckers, releasing a list of 315 commercial trucking companies that each owe at least $5,000. Among them is one company that, according to the agency, has amassed $155,827 in unpaid tolls.

Altogether, the turnpike reports that these companies owe a combined $5.2 million in tolls.

Officials said they rely on several methods to collect unpaid tolls, including capturing license plate images, mailing invoices, sending debts to collections, blocking license plate renewals, and pursuing legal action when necessary.

It remains unclear how frequently unpaid tolls lead to court cases.
