2 Bodies, Including Drowning Victim, Recovered from Jamaica Bay

Several bodies were discovered around Jamaica Bay over the weekend. One of them contained the body of Brandon Figueroa, an 18-year-old who drowned in the ocean off Beach 733rd Street on May 19.

According to the NYPD, on Friday, May 29, at around 7:35 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about a water rescue behind the Beach Channel Educational Campus on Beach 100th Street. Police arrived to find an unidentified male body on the rocks along the bay wall. They discovered skeletal remains, indicating that the body had been under the water for a long time. As we go to print, the person remains unidentified. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and will attempt to identify the person. An investigation is underway.

Then, on Saturday, May 30, at roughly 5:20 p.m., police responded to a 911 call for a water rescue in Jamaica Bay, off Beach 222nd Street, near Breezy Point. When authorities arrived, they noticed an unresponsive, unidentified person near the shoreline. The NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit went to the scene and extracted the victim from the water. EMS arrived and declared the subject dead on the scene.

According to an update to the GoFundMe for Brandon Figueroa, his mother, Jeanette Munoz, shared the sad news that the body found was her son’s.

The additional remains were discovered while a local adolescent remained missing. Jafet “Elijah” Jemmott, a 15-year-old Arverne resident, has gone missing since November 28. Surveillance footage shows him stepping off the Q52 bus at Beach 95th Street. He has yet to be located. The remains discovered on Friday have not been publicly identified, therefore it is unclear whether they are linked to this tragedy.
