A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed at the skate park inside Grant Park on Wednesday night, Chicago police said.
Just after 9 p.m., officers responding to reports of shots fired and a person shot in the 1100 block of South Michigan Avenue observed young individuals fleeing the park. When they arrived at the skate park, they discovered the 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the neck, police said. A surgeon who happened to be nearby attempted to save the boy, but he died from his injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Police scoured the area for a Black male with dreadlocks who was spotted fleeing the incident, dressed in a black hoodie with red writing, black skinny jeans, and a rucksack. He was last spotted fleeing north, near the Metra railroad.
Officers discovered a handgun on an adjacent Metra platform and detained a 19-year-old male, but witnesses told them he was not the shooter. Nonetheless, CPD arrested him for trespassing on Metra property and will conduct further investigation.
Wednesday’s victim marks the seventh person shot in the Loop this year, up from five at this point the previous year. One of the 2025 shootings was ruled as self-defense. At this time in 2024, eight persons have been shot, with two being deemed self-defense.
