A police pursuit ended early Wednesday after the suspect crashed and suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Plainfield Police Department, officers attempted to stop a car going at a high pace at 1:27 a.m. Officers investigated the vehicle’s records and discovered that the owner had an active arrest warrant.
The driver failed to stop, resulting in a pursuit. The suspect drove east on Interstate 70 and into Marion County.
During the pursuit, the vehicle collided with a median, sustaining damage and inflating its tires. Shortly after, the vehicle came to a halt on I-70 near the Holt Road and Harding Street exits.
Officers approached the vehicle and discovered the driver, the only occupant, suffering from a gunshot wound. A pistol was found beside the driver.
The motorist was sent to a local hospital in critical condition. Police believe the driver shot himself, but they are still investigating.
No Plainfield police officers discharged their firearms during the event, and all officers and vehicles were outfitted with cameras.
The incident is still under investigation.
